If you're heading to Barcelona there is always something to do but get here on the right day and you'll be lucky enough to get involved in some of the great festivities that bring a real unique sense of character to the tradition of Barcelona.

Dia de Sant Jordi. This is a simple yet charming festival celebrating the lives of Saint George and Miguel de Cervantes (Cervantes died on the day of the celebrations). On Las Ramblas book stalls are set up as are flower stalls. Men present a rose to women for Saint George and women return the favor by giving men a book, as this is a celebration of the life of Cervantes. It is also the death of William Shakespeare on this date making it increasingly important for the literary world.

Festival de Sant Joan. If you want to throw yourself into the cultural side of things then look no further than Festival de Saint John. Its main aim is for people to be brought closer to the natural culture and is a hectic show of fireworks and bonfires followed by a set of fun times for everyone. Be sure to check it out if you are around the 23rd to the 24th of June.

One of the main fesivals that is an essential to check out for anyone into their alternative and dance music is the Festival de Sonar. This is an extremely popular festival that brings the sound of advanced music and a blend of art. No matter what form of media you enjoy, what you check out is sure to impress. It brings a breath of fresh air to the proceeding as their are some major artists from all over the world, so needless to say if you love music then you can't miss out on this opportunity.

Festes de la Merce. This is one of the biggest festivals around that celebrates the life of the Virgin de la Merce and includes the competition of the tallest human tower. If that doesn't sell you then check out the parade of the giants and the sporting events that are available.

If that isnt enough for you then you can always check out the Fest Major de Gracia, la Diada and the Festes de la Merce to get involved in the festivities.
