Food and Drink in Barcelona
Introduction
When describing the gastronomy of Barcelona, the city offers a contrasting selection that ranges from traditional cuisine to a real mix of exotic tastes. If you're looking for a popular dish then la escudella could be just for you! It's a dish that consists of vegetables, noodles, rice and potatoes. If you want a bit of carne (meat) thrown into the mix then look no further than cocido con judias blancas, made with sausage originating from the area.
For a taste of the ocean's finest be sure to try a zarzuela, a winning combination of cuttlefish, mussels and prawns. If you're feeling particuarly extravagant then ask for la opera which is the same as the previous combination but with the addition of lobster. It is common practise to use olive oil, vegetables, pig and fish in the meals. A simple yet delicious option is pa amb tomáquet, a union of flavours with tomato rubbed onto toasted bread which then is topped with olive oil and salt. Some great wines include: Alella, Priorat, Tarragona, Tera Alta and Montsant.
There is also the popular practise of molecular gastronomy, which refers to the scientific research into food and at what temperature is ideal for particular dishes.
