History in Granada
Granada History
Granada can be traced back thousands of years when small tribes inhabited the area. It wasn't until 1000BC that the Phoenicians took control, followed in 250BC by the Romans, who named their settlement Iliberis.
After the fall of the Romans, the Germanic tribe known as the Visigoths rose to power in Granada. Their control of the city meant it grew in importance on an economic, military and religious level. They named the city Garnata al yahut which is a lot more recognizable as Granada that what it was previously.
The Visigoth period went for a total of 200 years before it dropped to the Moors. They took it the city for several hundreds of years, during which they continued to expand the prospects of the country. Problems arose when the Arabs in control had internal conflicts that started to chip away at the power of the city. Ziries were in power where they put Morocco as an independent location where they stayed in power for two years.
The following period was under Nazari - another Moorish dynasty - rule, which is when the Alhambra palace was constructed.
