Festivals and Holidays in Malaga
Introduction
Whilst spending time in Malaga you will soon realise that there is a wide range of great activities you can get involved with but thats not including the several festivals going on throughout the year! So take a look at the list below to see when you arrive what will be going on and how you can get involved, its a great way to throw yourself in the deep end and enjoy the culture that surrounds you with religious festivals all the way down to parades and masked parties, either way your sure to have a brilliant time!
- January- Magic Kings, Its the spanish alternative to father christmas and the three kings (Melchor, Gasper and Balthazar) are there to hand out all the gifts. This doesn't happen until the 6th of January so unlike christmas in the UK for example you will have plenty of time to get the presents ready!
- February- The day of Andalusia, celebrating the province that is andalusia. There are also carnivals going on early in the month that have a huge range of parties and celebrations.
- March- Easter week, followed into april it is recognized as one of the most important festivals in the cities calendar, it has been a tradition celebrated for many years over the centuries dating back to Catholic monarchs. The week has been noted as very different from other versions of the festival around Spain as it is filled with a heightened sense of excitement and joy that really is a treat for all.
- April- As mentioned it shares the Easter period with March for one of the most important religious festivals of the year.
- May- Day of the worker, a national day that shows appreciation to all the hard workers of spain. There is also Cruces de Mayo (crosses of May) in celebration of the story of saint helen where crosses are decorated with a range of flowers.
- June- Corpus Christi, The Catholic celebration of the body of christ in holy wafer, it immerged from a king of Granada who instructed a party for the change from Moor to Christian control and religious influence with everyone ready to comply. Throughout the years the party has only got bigger and now proves to be one of the most popular in Spain.
- July- Virgen de Carmen, celebration for the patron of the sea, several events will be taking lace to celebrate the virgin and a group of band players will march in a procession whilst choirs commense their vocal talents. It then goes onto give the traditional blessing of the water.
- August- Feria de Malaga, one of the biggest clebrations where everyone will dress up and there will be plenty of music and dancing to make this a really enjoyable period.
- September- Semana internacional de cine, The place for film makers to go to promote their latest work and follows the typical award show style with its awards and previews with the ever increasing occurance of celebrities.
- October- National Spanish day, It really focuses on the heritage of spain and Malaga is as passionate about this festival as anyone else, with a range of parties and dancing occuring its a joyful occasion.
- November- Fiesta del tostón, A religious festival that is proceeded with many local cuisine delights, the usual partying until the early hours of the morning and much more.
- December- Day of the Spanish Constitution, The day of the Spanish constitution, it celebrates the day in 1978 that Spain left the opression of dictatorship and ransformed into a democracy. King Juan Carlos signed the document that gave Spain the breath of fresh air known as freedom, as you can imagine this is a very important day on the calendar for all Spanish people.
