Introduction

The roots of Malaga set you back around 3000 years and has an ideal location for trade being right by the mediterranean sea, its name was prevously known as Malaka and it was full of valuable raw materials and examples are silver and copper. As was typical of most of Spain the Romans eventually took over but prior to that it was the Phoenicians and Carthaginians who took charge of the reigns.

The Romans after settling in didn't mess around and Malaga started to show some real promise as it had its initial economical centre to bring focus to the trade potential, the Roman theatre had been notably created around this time and you are still able to visit the ruins today. They had power from 218BC until around 5th century and Malaga became quite important in the empire and interestingly it was one of the more stronger majorities for Christianity, once the Romans realised the end wasn't far away they were removed from power by the Germanic tribe the Visigoths though unfortunately for them the Moors fancied taking a shot at power so the Visigoths didnt stay in power even one hundred years.

Out of necescity the Moors carefully defended themselves for the first few decades then later expanding on their boundaries, to literally cement this they built structures such as town walls with the gates to boot. Though powerstruggles began with the Moorish empire and for a while during the 11th century the kindgoms changed quite frequently, the end of the 15th century seen the completion of the Alcazaba which acted as a palace for those in charge of the city.

The next period belonged to the Christians taking over in the 15th century and with the help of insiders of Malaga managed to properly settle in 1487, the treatment of remaining Moors wasnt exactly admirable with many being killed or sold as slaves and many of the constructions were replaced with Christian equivalents. The 17th and 18th century brought about many problems which in some cases literally shook the foundation of Malaga (earthquake), the attempts were made to rebuild what had been damaged such as the docks and there was also a small period where the French thanks to Napoleon but this only lasted two years.
